Exit Interview

1.  EQ: How can a lineman best reduce the risk of injury or fatality on the job?

  1. Planning & Preparation play an important role in keeping a lineman safe.
  2. Work Exercises & Proficiency help a lineman maintain the skills needed to be safe on the job.
  3. Job briefing helps reduce the risk of injury or fatality.
Best answer: My best answer is #1, because Planning and Preparation is what helps an everyday lineman get by on every job assignment that they are sent to. Before doing anything a lineman must plan ahead and prepare for any unwanted events. This is also true for many jobs, but the big difference is that no other job have risk factors that a lineman must face. Big reason being that a lineman is exposed to an enormous amount of electrical fatal current every day they show up to work.

2. From the beginning of the year I found my first answer, a tailgate with my mentors help. But when the second answer was assigned I wasn't sure at all what else to choose. One day at mentor ship around January , my mentor Mark Werndorf who works for LA Water & Power, showed me a lineman pyramid. Just like there is a pyramid for all the food categories, there was one made for lineman. What we ended up doing was spitting it in half. Tailgate went under Planning & Preparation so it wasn't too hard transitioning to it. But my second answer had a lot of information that wasn't necessarily accessible by internet. But that pyramid contained the knowledge of many experienced lineman who've edited it and gave their opinions about. Now that I have my two answers I am able to see how all my research fits into both my answers and especially my first and best answer.

3. I actually didn't face many problems except for the fact that most of my research is pretty technical and since I don't have the inside experience that teaches what I'm reading, it's going to make it a bit difficult to put everything that I'm learning into more simplistic words for the class and my final presentation.

4. The biggest source has been my mentor, when ever there is something I didn't understand about my research I wrote it down and asked him, he gave me full on technical and easy to understand definitions and examples. The second is biggest source is, "The Guidebook for Lineman & Cableman". Has every technical aspect of the job and gives scenarios, examples, and definitions of all the equipment and vehicles they use.

Independent Component 2

a) I, Daniel Gamboa, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.
b) My mentor Mark Werndorf who works for LA Water & Power.
Mark.Werndorf@ladwp.com
c) By talking to my mentor will be more than enough proof because we have been working hard to move things out of the way  and sort what I need to complete. We have planned out the activity and I made a layout of what will be on my slides so he can evaluate it and see what to fix so that we can prepare for the final presentation.

Third Answer

EQ: How can a lineman best reduce the risk of injury or fatality on the job?

One of the best ways to reduce these risks is by a job briefing.

  • The job will be laid out showing everyone whats going to be done.
  • The workers wont be confused on what is to be expected for the job.
  • All safety measures will be addressed making the work environment safer.

This may not be the best answer but its an important answer that plays a role in protecting yourself in this career.

Advisory Meeting #2

How can a lineman best reduce the risk of injury or fatality on the job?
 Answer#2:
- Skills & Proficiency is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of injury or fatality because those are strong fundamentals for this career.

  • Knowledge is important because you need to know the specs of construction, for example, when setting up a pole you need to know how to lay the foundation.
  • You need to know & learn the practices and exercises you learn during training so that you can put it to use once you start working
  • You must gain experience by learning not only from your mistakes but also from others mistakes.
- The information was all gathered and sorted out by me mentor at my mentor-ship.

I feel that my second answer is really important and stands out in supporting my EQ.

2. I will be logging in my hours and post pictures for the extra posts of each month and also show small facts on the pictures of what I am learning.
3. I will be asking my mentor and others in the facility my EQ and see what they respond so I can have many perspectives and answers to research.

Blog 11: Mentorship 10 Hours

1. I'm doing my mentorship at LA Water & Power facility in Sun Valley.
2. Mark Werndorf
3. So far I have completed 45 hours
4. I spent the day hauling branches and logs out of the property and into the load up truck.

Blog 10: Senior Project: the holiday

1. I did the homework that my mentor left me which was to crumble news paper. Another thing that I did and liked was that I had all the time that I needed to read through my research and take my time to understand it.
2. This career choice is unique because of all the tools and skills/knowledge one must obtain and learn to use with care to be able to work and stay "safe" and out of harms reach. This stood out for me because it came from the "Guide Book for Lineman & Cable man" that my mentor gave me.
3. If I had to make a 10 question interview I'd choose to interview my mentor Mark Werndorf simply because his life is devoted to teaching even the most experienced linemen on up to date tools and the knowledge and attitude one needs to endure this type of job.
